What Is Guardianship?
Guardianship is a legal relationship that exists between a child and a guardian. Guardianship may be ordered by a court when a child is abandoned, abused, or neglected. A guardian may be appointed to care for the child in place of the parent or guardian. Guardianship may also be ordered when a child is orphaned or when a child is not yet old enough to be emancipated from the parent or guardian. Guardianship may be ordered in conjunction with dependency.
